The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society, by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows, a favorite of book discussion groups in independent bookstores throughout the United States. This novel explores the farming community of Guernsey (off the coast of France) and its development of the Literary and Potato Peel Society through a series of letters written to fictional London-based author, Juliet Ashton. It recounts the occupation of Guernsey by the Germans in World War II through the lens and filters of an amazing set of characters. Mostly the book is about survival, friendship and connection.
At each meeting of the group, we will be using contextual materials to foster discussion of social and cultural issues that go beyond the text itself. The books we have selected are designed to lead to broader discussions of art and literature, emancipation of body and spirit, with continued emphasis on the multicultural dimensions of these issues. Joy Mitra will coordinate the contextual materials that will provided contextual enrichment for these discussions.
